A relaxed afternoon by the sea with five kids, sand, laughter and light.
When you think about taking five kids to the beach for a photoshoot, you might picture chaos. But this session was anything but. It was gentle and joy-filled – the kind of day where everything aligned just enough to remind you why you wanted this documented in the first place.
We met where the bushland meets the sand, the light was soft, and the children were free to roam. No one had to sit still or pose. They ran barefoot through the dunes, splashed at the edge of the water, and climbed over driftwood, giggling the whole time. It was real, natural, and exactly how a beach family photoshoot should feel.
If you’re thinking about booking your own session, here are a few things to keep in mind to make the most of it:
1. Let go of expectations
Kids will be sandy, wet, and probably a little wild – that’s the point. The best images come when they’re free to explore and be themselves. You don’t need to direct or manage anything. Let them lead.
2. Dress comfortably and simply
Think soft tones, natural fabrics, and outfits that you’re not afraid to get sandy. Avoid logos or anything stiff. Light linens, cottons, and bare feet photograph beautifully against nature’s backdrop.
3. Pick the right time of day
Late afternoon is ideal – when the sun is lower, the colours are warmer, and the beach is quieter. That soft light makes all the difference.

4. Bring water and a few snacks
Especially for little ones. Beach sessions are playful and often last a little longer than indoor shoots. A banana and a few crackers can keep everyone grounded.
5. Trust the process
Your job is to be there, not to make it perfect. I’ll guide gently if needed, but mostly I’ll be following along, noticing the moments as they unfold.
This recent session was a reminder that the simplest afternoons often hold the most magic.
A barefoot walk, siblings hand in hand, the dog splashing nearby, and parents soaking it in, not rushing, just witnessing it all.

If you’d love to capture your family this way, I photograph families across Phillip Island, the Mornington Peninsula, Gippsland and Melbourne’s coastal pockets. I’d love to help you hold onto a day like this, forever.
